Artist’s books (or book arts) are works of art that utilize the form of the book. They may be published in editions or created as one-of-a-kind objects, called “unique books.” Over time, my lifelong practice of keeping field journals has evolved into making artist’s books. The pages for my books are painted outdoors, and often include hand-lettered field notes. In addition to the low tech quiet charms of books, I like how folded sheets of paper may be tucked into a pack or kayak, and later transformed into books. I use watercolor, ink, and gouache, compact materials that facilitate my work in remote places. Enjoying a book is a lot like walking in a forest: one enters and moves through to explore what may be revealed within.
My artist’s books are organized into collections: Backcountry, Birdsong, Field Studies, HOPE? and In Forests.
